I tried to specify relative path to the images for slide show but it looks like it is automatically converted to the full path. Is there a way to specify the path that will be relative to xml file location?

The recommended approach to use relative paths to the project file is by using the ${build_project_directory} variable, which resolves to the directory containing the project file. In the case of the slide images, you could use something like:

  <project>
    ...
    <slideShowImageList>
       <slideShowImage>
          <path>${build_project_directory}/images/image1.png</path>
       </slideShowImage>
       <slideShowImage>
          <path>${build_project_directory}/images/image2.png</path>
       </slideShowImage>
       <slideShowImage>
          <path>${build_project_directory}/images/image3.png</path>
       </slideShowImage>
    </slideShowImageList>
    ...
  </project>
