I would like to create a timestamp during the build and save this value in the installation tree. Using this timestamp will help me to identify the installation uniquely. What is the correct way to do that? It looks like variables defined in pre-build do not exist during the installation.

Yes, as shown in that question, you should simply create <stringparameter> with ask="0" (so it is not shown as a parameter to ask the user) for variables you want to persist to installation. Such as:

  <stringParameter name="mysql_port" ask="0" />
