The tag <platformtest> check if a Linux or Windows is 32 or 64 bit, but it can 'not' do so for OSX.

What alternative could I use to determine whether a OSX is running a 64 bit kernel and/or is running on a 64 bit CPU ?

Retrieving that information can be tricky because of what 64bit means (as you mention, kernel or 64bit capable). Do you need to check all those cases or only if the machine is capable of running 64bit applications (kernel extensions not need)?
