InstallBuilder has support for showProgressDialog action which lets you display an indeterminate progressmeter in a popup window to execute a list of actions. You can use it inside any action list: actionList, validationActionList, postInstallationActionList, etc.

<validationActionList>
  <showProgressDialog>
    <title>Please wait</title>
    <width>400</width>
    <height>100</height>
    <actionList>
      <actionGroup>
        <progressText>Database connection is being validated</progressText>
        <actionList>
          <wait ms="3000">
            <progressText>Database connection is being validated (step 1)</progressText>
          </wait>
          <wait ms="3000">
            <progressText>Database connection is being validated (step 2)</progressText>
          </wait>
        </actionList>
      </actionGroup>
    </actionList>
  </showProgressDialog>
</validationActionList>
